Mangrove ecosystem
Taiwan,a subtropical island surrounded by oceans, provides special ecological environment, ie. high salt level, for mangrove growth. Mangroves are closely influenced by the tides, hence the other name"tidal flora system". Mangroves adapt to the high variations of humidity, high salt content, anaerobic swamp soil.
Dense mangrove vegetation retains organic substances carried by the river and tides. The fallen leaves and twigs also contribute to the soil fertility, resulting in an abundant food source for fish, shrimps, crabs and shellfish in the tidal zone that are in turn food for bigger animals like birds.
